The Tieback

At 3 a.m., I was awoken by a frantic pounding on my door and a rough voice that ordered, "Everyone away from the windows and get to the hallway! Someone's throwing rocks at our windows!" All 8 children complied without an argument. As we sat, huddled in the darkness of the passageway, the menfolk rushed outside with their choice of protection and hounds at their feet. We waited. And waited. Worry grew. Drowsy heads nodded.

Soon, a reluctant man trudged down the hall, "All clear. I made a mistake." As we roused from our position of "safety", the story came to light. Our guests were sound asleep in bed when the loud CRACK came. Startled for a moment, they were about to slip back into sleep mode when a number of smaller POP POP POP's were heard. A loud crash brought them both to the floor, attempting to crawl for the passageway. It was only after the men ran outside yelling at the unseen tsotsis (thieves) that they began to question the source of the noise. Upon further investigation of the window, it was noted that the curtain tie-back was jammed between the pane of glass and the security bars. Pressure upon a small crack in the glass mounted until the framework could hold it no longer. Hence, all the commotion.

As we climbed back under the covers, some groaned and some of us erupted in laughter, imagining 11 people cowering in a passageway, afraid of a curtain tieback. We will give our "alert-man" credit, as it very well could have been someone throwing rocks, but for now, we're all safe and sound! I can't help but smile. Never a dull moment when you get these 2 families together : D

Simplicity

There is Beauty in Simplicity.

"Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
                                                                                              Matthew 6:30-33

Valentine's Day rolled around and I didn't think much about it till dinner time. Brianna and I put our heads together to create a guy-friendly, yet thematic meal, which proved to be a hit.

- A small smile to brighten my day -
What looks like a simple worm to one's eye, becomes a thing of complicated beauty when you focus in on the moment.

Botswana Bound

Thursday morning: bound to Botswana. Saturday morning: bound by Botswana. Due to an unforeseen issue with our "van" (aka. kombi), what was to be a 3 day stay-over is turning out to be slightly longer. The rainy season is upon us and a recent down pour also flooded the main highway home. God's ways are always best...

~ Mrs. Castner's birthday ~
While Dad made the 7 hr round trip to a village in Zimbabwe, we had fun "camping out" at the Castners (missionary friends in Botswana). Plenty of time to catch up with friends we don't see very often and enjoy a very green Botswana... :)

The boys went out mudding one afternoon, with the neighbor guys
Oodles of pool time to keep us cool on the hot days.

Took a walk down to the river with this girl one morning. Coffee, friends, sunshine....bliss.
Friends by the pool. Yes, that is my hand and no, I'm not afraid of frogs (obviously!).

Christmas, Part 2

After a filling brunch and opening gifts, everyone split up, heading to various houses of family/friends. Thanks to the invite of friends, Miah tag-teamed with me back to my friend's house. With his dry sense of humor he had some laughing and many sighing throughout the evening :)

~Alayna Follett~
Just about every time my mum had another baby ( often ;) ) or my parents went on a mission's trip, I was farmed out to the Folletts. Many thanks to their family opening their home once again & for putting up with me for a couple weeks! It was like stepping back a dozen yrs and reliving memories.

Someone was pretty stoked about his new stash of goodies...
Between games, an impressive amount of food, good company and a lot of laughter, the evening flew by. We even squeezed in phone calls to long-distance relatives (a definite highlight of my day) & a skype call home to Africa. My family there invited several nationals to celebrate with them. Mum roasted a leg of pork. It must have been a pretty special day, seeing as folks are still reminiscing about it. :)

Never knew that it was an American tradition to have shrimp on Christmas. For those who like seafood...all the more power to you. I'll gladly give you mine ;)

:: Home ::

Home. To some, the word means relaxation. To others, maybe a bit of quiet and tranquility, family. At the moment, I'm enjoying both meanings, though "quiet" might be a stretch. Mozzies buzzing, the neighbor's macaws cawing for dinner, kids zipping around my chair on their bikes. Well, so much for tranquility. But I'll take the noise over absolute silence.
Climbing over Dubai
My flight(s) went better than expected. Early Wednesday morning, I lifted my shade and took in one of the most spectacular sunrises I've ever seen. It was as if a rainbow was stretching itself across the top of the clouds. My camera was tucked away, but it gave me time to dwell on my amazing Creator. Baffles my mind that there are those out there who don't believe in God. Really? In the beginning GOD created the heavens and the earth. How simple, yet how complex. And to think that such a great God would stoop to care about me. Just meditate on that...

In my comfort zone...

Due to an influx of veggies from the garden, one of my first priorities was to clean out the deep freeze. After collecting a container of  ice, Brianna created a "snowman". When you never see snow down here, you take what you can get! Creativity in action, eh?

Someone lost weight while I was away...He looks great, don't ya think?

My siblings are still into the whole crazy jump thing.  Joel's broken arm didn't deter them much ;) okay, so I'll admit, I've done some flips myself, but only when there's a trampoline beneath and not only terra firma.

And lest you think we play/relax all day, think again. Life is far from dull. With a garden that is producing fruit like crazy, there's always something boiling in the pot. We've put up quarts upon quarts of sweet corn, carrots, green beans & butternut. Tomatoes will be ready soon (too soon) and whatever else is out in that maze.

Goodbyes

My last full day in the States is drawing just about over and the final goodbyes will be said tomorrow. I detest goodbyes. Anyone with me on that one?? And those tear jerking moments when you have to say "see ya later", without knowing how long "later" will be...Yeah. Not fun. Bid adieu to 3 of my siblings on Friday, 1 on Sunday and 1 more to go tomorrow. Prayer's appreciated...gonna be a rough flight ;)

Shout out to my sister, Dea, who's an amazing packer!!! And those bags are still underweight ;)

Christmas, Part 1

Merry Christmas! Belated is better than nothing, eh? The last few Christmases for our family have been anything but normal. This was Jeremiah's & my first Christmas away from home, though. A unique twist. 6 of us Stateside siblings were able to get together at Jon's house for a Christmas brunch.

Bachelor's attempt at decorating for Christmas...
Lots of laughter going on~
Girls provided the food and the guys covered the drinks.

We tried to contain the trouble-makers :)

Snow Days

Prayer! It really works...not that I doubted it, of course. This girl has been praying for that lovely white stuff that falls from the sky during the winter season.

2 munchkins who had way to much fun at my expense (hint: snowballs).
First snowman of the season.
Yes, I know my sense of style is awful...but after not seeing snow for 4 years... : )

Pursuit of Happiness

After 33 hours in transit, I finally reached my home away from home. Well, they say home is where the heart is and I'm beginning to believe it. Though Africa is my home, 4 little munchkins in Maryland stole my heart at first glance. Meet my nieces...Madelyn (right) Meredith (center), Mikah (left), and Moriah (pictured farther down). Their antics never cease to amaze me. Mikah's sleepy, "I love you, Tannie," melts me, Meredith's unending energy makes me slightly jealous, Madelyn's infectious giggle produces giggles laughs of my own, and Moriah's sweet-natured temperament keeps my sanity in check (it is possible, honest).

Got our first snow, much to everyone's delight
My sister babysits 2 other children on weekdays, creating a hectic, but rather fun atmosphere. Hence, the days fly by!

My sister, brother-in-law and nieces made the 3-4 hour trip up to my hometown in for a family Thanksgiving. All the stateside siblings, minus 1 were able to gather for pie that evening. Just a f.y.i....jetlag/reverse culture shock is brutal. Do not try to carry on a conversation when you're beyond exhaustion. Epic failure....you'd think I'd be used to this by now.
Moriah Jayne. Love my girl!

Aron, Dea and I attended a church Christmas banquet one evening. Fantabulous time~

Mikah love wearing "silly hats". Even if it is a baby doll and not a hat.
